A Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) employee Nayaz Ahmad died on May 4 after sustaining life-threatening injuries in a hit and run road accident. Ahmad, 38, a junior engineer with JMI and an alumnus, was hit by a pulsar on May 2 as he was trying to cross the road at the university, according to well-established source.

The injury was serious as after being hit by the vehicle Ahmad lost his conscious. He was immediately rushed to a nearby Holy Family hospital.

For two days doctors did their best to resuscitate the engineer. But his conditions couldn’t improve and he succumbed to his injuries.

His death in a road accident has sparked debate on the campus about rash driving.

Of late JMI road has become risky. During rush hours in morning and evening the road is risky to travel with most of the people driving insanely. Besides, the two kilometer stretch has no red lights and zebra crossing.

Many university employees worry about the increasing risk on JMI road. For long there has been demand to close the road and make it accessible for students and teachers only. But till now no concrete results have come out.

If thong goes well then under the proposed Master Plan the Delhi government has plans to divert private traffic from the university area. But it is not known when the project will get implemented.

Often bikers do stunts during peak traffic hours! Police usually do not interfere, saying locals make it an issue of victimization of minorities if we try to take some action.
