Jamia observes International Women's DayOT, March 12, 2012 19:51 IST Okhla Times Campus Reporter/JMI Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia is going to organize a Panel Discussion on “Sharing Experiences and Learning Lessons from Life and Literature” to commemorate International Women’s Day. The Session is scheduled to be held on March 13, 2012 at 9.30 AM in the Committee Room of Nehru Guest House, Jamia Millia Islamia. Najeeb Jung (IAS), Vice-Chancellor, JMI will deliver his Inaugural address on this occasion. In the first panel discussion, the panelists will be Sohaila Kapur, journalist, writer, director and actor, Danish Iqbal, writer, channel head at FM Gold, AIR and Dr. Lavlin Thadani, filmmaker, actor, writer and poet. Githa Hariharan, renowned writer & novelist, and presently, scholar in Residence at Jamia Millia Islamia will chair the session. The second topic of discussion is “Women and Conflict Setting: Roles, Needs, Vulnerabilities” which will commence at 12 Noon. The discussants are: Sadia Dehlvi, Tarannum Riyaz and Prof. Sanjoy Hazarika. Prof. Veena Sikri, Career Diplomat & Ford Foundation Chair at Bangladesh Studies Programme, Academy of International Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia will Chair, claimed the university release. Also, ISTE-Jamia Students Chapter in association with ‘INK’ organized the annual festival of Faculty of Architecture and Ekistics called “JUST from WASTE” on March 4, 2012 at Jamia. The event involved two parts: Creating awareness among students for re-using their waste materials via movie clips and slides and involving them for waste collection and then for productive and innovative use of waste for decoration purposes or any other activities. The following are the outcomes of the event: 8 teams consisting of two members each participated and collected about 25 kg of waste materials from University campus and treated through proper channel; Cups, plastic bottles, disposables were collected by students and then taken up for proper treatment of waste materials; Students got awareness about harmful consequences of waste and e-waste; the winners were awarded certificate and T-shirts which were sponsored by green Planet Waste Management Pvt. Ltd.
Book Donation Drive As part of the initiative, the student volunteers would set up book stall at the main gate on the campus near Ghalib Statue on March 13, 2012 from 10 AM to 2 PM. Under this initiative, anyone who is in need of books can get books available at the stall. These books have been donated by people in and around Jamia. This book donation drive is part of community development initiatives which are organized on campus from time to time with the purpose of helping economically weak students and to inculcate the spirit of volunteerism among those who work for the programme.
