Jamia changes entrance exam time at the last moment, students left in searing heatOT, May 29, 2011 IST Okhla Times Campus Reporter/JMI Puja Singh (name changed) reached Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) around 8 A.M. on May 29 for her Diploma in Elementary Education (DEE) entrance test. After two hours long wait she was informed by the Bull (security guards of JMI) that the test has been postponed until 2 P.M. A residence of Mayur Vihar Phase I, Puja was devastated. With no friends in Okhla, she had no idea where to spend some four hours in the searing heat with most of the departments closed. Puja was not alone. There were some hundred young aspirants who travelled from far places to take this exam, but to be told at the last minute that it would be held at 2 P.M. Aditi (name changed), who came at the University, at around 9 A.M, said: “Most of the students are upset with the change of time. Ironically, nobody was informed about the change. This shows that authorities are least bothered about timing.” A guard posted at Jamia School said: “Information about the new timing was posted on the net.” Aditi said the University should have informed us. In the prospectus it was mentioned that the entrance test for DEE would be held in the morning, claimed a student. An agitated father of an aspirant said: “This shows how callous the authorities are. There was no advertisement published in the newspapers also.” Aspirants who could find friends in Okhla anyhow managed to stay there till 2 P.M. But many were left to stay in the open in the scorching heat. What made life difficult for them was non-availability of drinking water. Also, Bulls don’t allow outsiders to get into the university even to use toilet and drink water, claimed a parent. Officials comment was not available as the University is officially closed.
