Jamia celebrates its 90th Foundation Day

Internationally-famed central university Jamia Millia Islamia celebrated its 90th Foundation Day on Friday. The historic ceremony started with the newly-appointed Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung receiving the Guard of Honour by NCC Cadets. Chief guest Harsh Mandar, a well-known social activist, and other dignitaries and students were also present on that occasion. The celebrations went on till night with the Sufiyana Qawwali being the main attraction for qawwali buffs.

Students and locals participated in the event with great enthusiasm. A research scholar Nasimur Rahman told Okhla Times: "It is a historic occasion for the university and the students. In the last 90 years the university has produced many extraordinary talented students who have gone to serve the cause of the nation." Students of Jamia School stole the limelight with their rendition of Jamia Tarana. On this occasion audiences, including dignitaries and government representatives, were informed about Jamia’s past and its recent achievement.

Harsh Mandar had all good things to say about the university that is fighting a battle for the last 60 years to be declared a minority university. Also, Jung talked about the sacrifices that the university has made. A Foundation Day Lecture on Vision of Indian Youth in 21st Century was also held at 4.30 P.M. at Dr MA Ansari Auditorium. Minister of State for Commerce & Industry Jyotiraditya Scindia was the chief guest. Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Minority Affairs Salman Khurshid was also among the invitees. The Foundation Day celebrations went on till 8 P.M.

Also, the Foundation Day was held in the locality by Jamia Alumni.

HISTORY:
JMI was established at Aligarh in United Provinces, India in 1920. Later on it was moved to New Delhi in the Okhla area. In 1988 the university became a Central University by an act of the Indian Parliament. Since then JMI has played a positive role in national building. The university has been fighting a battle to be declared a minority institution as most of its students are Muslims.
