Central university Jamia Millia Islamia conferred an honorary doctorate on Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on November 23. After receiving the degree the Dalai Lama said: “I got this degree without (undertaking) study. It is sometime good. Without much effort, I received various degrees from many universities.” Also he addressed the gathering, including students who had turned up in huge numbers for the convocation ceremony. A total of 3529 Degrees/Diplomas were awarded to students who successfully completed Post-graduation, Graduation, and Diploma from different Faculties/Departments/Centres of the University in the Academic Session 2008-09. The university also handed out 147 Gold Medals to the toppers of different courses.
Also it awarded 127 Ph.D. degrees to research scholars. On this occasion, the Dalai Lama described Islam as a "very important" religion. The Tibetan leader said: “Since September 11 event, I stand firmly in defending Islam because due to few mischievous people from Muslim community, on their behaviour, generalisation of Islam is something negative, it is absolutely wrong.”
Union Minister of Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal was the Chief Guest and newly appointed vice chancellor of the university Najeeb Jung presided over the Annual Convocation. An MA Arabic pass out student Ahteshamul was there to receive his degree. He said: “It is historic moment for me. I have been waiting for this opportunity for the last one year. Other friends are also thrilled. It is a life-time opportunity for me. I was so thrilled that I arrived an hour early at the site.”
The Annual Convocation 2010 started with a roll call at 01:00 P.M. Those who didn’t turn up at the time of roll call were considered absent from the Convocation. The gowns and hoods were available at the Faculty of Engineering & Technology from the costumier on payment of Rs. 500/- as deposit (refundable) and Rs. 50/- (as hire charges).
