Ex-MP Shahabuddin accuses Jamia Prof of plagiarism, writes letter to JungOT, May 11, 2012 13:44 IST Okhla Times Campus Reporter/JMI Former Member of Parliament and Muslim India publisher Syed Shahabuddin has written a letter to Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) vice chancellor Najeeb Jung accusing a university assistant professor of plagiarism. Shahabuddin told OKHLA TIMES that Meher Fatima Hussain, Assistant Professor Dr. K. R. Narayanan Centre for Dalit and Minorities Studies, JMI, approached him for writing a foreword to a book. “Initially I had no idea. But later on she told me that she was compiling articles published in Muslim India (a magazine that was edited and managed by Shahabuddin for more than a decade), it was then that I objected to it that how can you write the book in your name when the articles on Muslim personalities were written by me. I argued with her that she has no right to publish the book by her name as it was my work,” he said. When Fatima didn’t pay any attention and decided to go ahead with her project, Shahabuddin wrote a letter to Najeeb Jung and also spoke to Mannak Publisher. The ex-MP said: “Jung has assured me that he will look into the matter. And I am still waiting for his response. The publisher who was ready to print the book in April has agreed to stop it for the time being.” The head of K. R. Narayanan Centre for Dalit and Minorities Studies Prof Azra Razzak could not be reached for comment. But Anwar Nadeem, who works in the department’s office, told OKHLA TIMES: “We have not received any such letter in which the issue of plagiarism has been raised.” Fatima said: "As the issue is with the VC I am not in a position to comment." Rubbishing Shahabuddin's allegation, she said: "He has already given a no objection certificate (NOC). His is an old man and he should have a good memory." When asked to show the NOC issued by Shahabuddin, Fatima said: "It is between her and the ex-MP and she declined to discuss the issue further. The book is not coming out." But Arya Prajapati manager of Mannak Publisher said: “Though the book is under process and most of the work been completed, we are waiting for positive response from Shahabuddin, who has objected to the publication of the book.” He said when the issue came to our notice we stopped work on the book. Praising Fatima, he said: “The JMIA professor has written many books and most of them have been hit. I don’t know why Shahabuddin (sb) has objected to it.” PHOTO CAPTION: Muslim India publisher Syed Shahabuddin at the Mushawarat office in Abul Fazal Enclave.
