Former Member of Parliament and Muslim India publisher Syed Shahabuddin has written a letter to Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) vice chancellor Najeeb Jung accusing a university assistant professor of plagiarism.

Shahabuddin told OKHLA TIMES that Meher Fatima Hussain, Assistant Professor Dr. K. R. Narayanan Centre for Dalit and Minorities Studies, JMI, approached him for writing a foreword to a book. “Initially I had no idea. But later on she told me that she was compiling articles published in Muslim India (a magazine that was edited and managed by Shahabuddin for more than a decade), it was then that I objected to it that how can you write the book in your name when the articles on Muslim personalities were written by me. I argued with her that she has no right to publish the book by her name as it was my work,” he said.

When Fatima didn’t pay any attention and decided to go ahead with her project, Shahabuddin wrote a letter to Najeeb Jung and also spoke to Mannak Publisher.

The ex-MP said: “Jung has assured me that he will look into the matter. And I am still waiting for his response. The publisher who was ready to print the book in April has agreed to stop it for the time being.”

The head of K. R. Narayanan Centre for Dalit and Minorities Studies Prof Azra Razzak could not be reached for comment. But Anwar Nadeem, who works in the department’s office, told OKHLA TIMES: “We have not received any such letter in which the issue of plagiarism has been raised.”

Fatima said: "As the issue is with the VC I am not in a position to comment." Rubbishing Shahabuddin's allegation, she said: "He has already given a no objection certificate (NOC). His is an old man and he should have a good memory."

When asked to show the NOC issued by Shahabuddin, Fatima said: "It is between her and the ex-MP and she declined to discuss the issue further. The book is not coming out."

But Arya Prajapati manager of Mannak Publisher said: “Though the book is under process and most of the work been completed, we are waiting for positive response from Shahabuddin, who has objected to the publication of the book.”

He said when the issue came to our notice we stopped work on the book.

Praising Fatima, he said: “The JMIA professor has written many books and most of them have been hit. I don’t know why Shahabuddin (sb) has objected to it.”

This is quite disheartening to read the news. Syed Shahabuddin saheb is not something that Ms. Meher Fatima Husain should talk about in such a contemptuous manner. He is the living legend and the future history will find it hard to produce such a learned person with this kind of political insight and intellectual guts. Ms. Meher jaisi hazaron 'so called' intellectuals unki mamooli khidmat par qurban ki ja sakti hain........ If it is true that Ms. Meher has backed off from publishing the controversial book, then it is greatly appreciated. However she also owes an apology to Respected Syed Shahabuddin Sahab for all discomfort she has caused to him. Let the good senses prevail.......

Prof. Fatima is a writer who has written many books on the issue of Indian Muslims. If someone says that she deserves no any praise in respect of Sayed Shahabuddin is highly objectionable. Is it right to say about a women of such talent who has proved her mettle in writing so many books should be discarded like this. I do think before posting any comments like this shows the weakness of his moral and intellectual strength. We should be happy that a woman like Fatima has gathered strength to compile the book based on the write up of Muslim personalities which was buried into the pages of Muslim India. This book should come out and Sayed Shahabuddin should be happy that finally such book has come out. He should not raise such irrelevant issues like plagiarism.

Dear Yadav from your post it appears that you are trying to take readers for a ride. But don't get fooled that anybody is convinced with your argument. If Fatima and you are right then why are you hesitant in sharing the NOC issued by Shahabuddin sb. Your defense is laughable as you write that the book cover had Shahabuddin as Author & Meher Fatima as a Editor. Did Meher Fatima edit the articles? Shahabuddin sb writes so well that nobody can edit his write up. Besides, those articles on Muslim personalities were written by Shahabuddin sb and hence it is his property. If somebody tries to use his or her name then it is plagiarism. I think Shahabuddin sb did the right thing by writing to the VC Najeeb Jung. Now it is his duty to set an inquiry against a teacher who preys on other works and is unable to produce original works. What type of a writer she is, who claims to have written many books. It is high time you and Fatima accepted your folly and apologize to Shahabuddin sb, a polymath.

Dear Rizwan Syed Sahib, Kindly send your e-mail then I will send a copy of Foreword & all mail which has been sent by me. Syed Sahib is prominent personality, no doubt, but does mean he so great, kindly don't be emotional on this issue. However, according to Magazine INDIA MUSLIM don't need any NOC for reproduce, but only acknowledged. However in this purpose book Syed Sahib is as an Author. Thanks.

Fathima is where she is only because of her influential husband. Her books are more of compilation not a genuine research work. I surprised to see, how some people calling her a great author. Good very good. Today, only these people shine who has links.
