Exhibition, T20 and tributes on Zakir Husain birth anniversary

The 115th birth anniversary of late Dr. Zakir Husain, former president of India and former chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) will be held on February 8, 2012 at 9.30 AM at his mausoleum located on Jamia Campus.

A number of VIPs and dignitaries are expected to attend this function and pay their tributes to the him, according to university officials.

On this occasion, the Jamia Old Boys' Association (JOBA) has also decided to organize Quran Khani on Zakir Hussain's mausoleum at about 9 AM. Later in the day around 12 PM, a T20 match is to be held at the Sports Ground, that earlier was known as Bhopal Ground.

The match is to be played between Jamia Old Boys' Association and Aligarh Old Boys' Association (AOBA). The name of the players are yet to be announced.

Other than these events, JMI’s Premchand Archives & Literary Centre has curated an exhibition on Dr Zakir Husain’s life, called “Dr. Zakir Husain: The Man and His Mission.” The glorious past and heritage will be showcased through this exhibition that could be on view for general public from 10 AM to 5 PM from February 8-14. A number of rare documents will also be on view as part of this exhibition.

Vice-Chancellor Najeeb Jung will inaugurate the event at 11 AM on February 8.

Dr. Hussain, who was third President of India (from 1967 until his death on May 3, 1969,) played a crucial role in sustaining JMI after it was shifted from Aligarh Muslim University in 1920 to Karol Bagh. After a few years it was moved to Jamia Nagar and since then it has been flourishing here, churning out some great personalities who have done the country proud.

After completing his PhD from Germany in Economics, Dr. Hussain headed the fledgling University in 1927 when it was going through its difficult phase of being closed. He lead from the front for more than two decades.

Born on February 8, 1897 in Hyderabad Deccan, he also participated in India's freedom struggle.
