Many youngsters who turned up early morning on May 26 at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) to appear for their class XI entrance were shocked to know that the exam was postponed.

Some parents, who had traveled from Old Delhi and other far places with their children, were deeply upset by the development. It was only after they reached the school that they came to know that the exam that was expected to be held at 9 AM as mentioned in the prospectus would be held at 3 PM.

The school head Tarique Habib confirmed this and said exam would be held in the afternoon.

The postponement of exam left many parents and youngsters stranded at JMI in the blistering heat. For those who come from nearby areas there is no problem as they will go back to their house. But some parents and youngsters will face tough time as they have to while away their time on the campus in the heat.

A Jamia Nagar resident blasted the authorities for not informing students on time and putting them in trouble. “This is sheer mismanagement. Just think where students and parents will go as outsiders are not allowed inside the campus. Worst of all there is no place to rest for parents and students. This is just harassment. Students’ energy will be sapped. As I came from the campus I noticed many distressed parents and youngsters standing outside the school looking for shelter,” he said on the condition of anonymity.

The university authorities have washed their hands off the whole issue by saying that they had already mentioned about the changes on the website. But how many youngsters have access to internet? What about those who come from Bihar and interior Uttar Pradesh?

This is not one off incident. Earlier too JMI had postponed timing of the exams at the last moment. One year the MBA entrance students were told at the last moment that the course has been scrapped for further value addition.

A well wisher of JMI, who requested not to be identified, said why does such thing happen again and again in Jamia only? “This only shows that there is mismanagement. And it should come to an end.”
