An email by Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) alumnus Baseer Siddiqui in Tauheed Khan’s run Jamia Millia Alumni Yahoo Directory has sparked a controversy.

In that email Baseer Siddiqui, who claims himself to be a pass out of Computer Engineering '06 from JMI, has called JMI vice chancellor Najeeb Jung a ‘crook’.

A senior JMI alumnus and co-founder of Jamialive.com told OKHLATIMES that he was shocked at the language used by Baseer against the VC.

“He is a sitting VC of our university and has had made positive contributions as well. We may agree to disagree with some of his stands but calling names without first hand information is a dangerous trend and in a bad taste. If not anything else, it just shows us in a bad light.”

Other JMI alumni declined to comment on the issue.

Tauheed Khan, moderator of the directory, told OKHLATIMES that he has warned Baseer for using such a language. What has come as a surprise for many is that how come Khan, who is known for editing and blocking posts, allowed such indecent email that too against the VC go by. On many occasions Khan has been accused of blocking and even rewriting posts per his wishes.

However, in this case Khan defended himself and said: “I had discussed the issue with the alumnus and reminded him that he was using harsh words. I hope that from now onwards the alumnus will no use such language.”

The letter that is at the centre of controversy was forwarded by another Jamia alumnus and we produce it here. Baseer Siddiqui wrote: “It is a matter of concern and sorrow that crooks like Mr. Najeeb are delivering Prof. Mohd. Mujeeb Memorial Lecture on a topic that is not his area of expertise by miles nor he is helping Prof. Mujeeb's cause. Either we have dearth of able scholars which I doubt or Director of Dr. Zakir Husain Institute of Islamic Studies wants some more perks from him.

“To me 92nd foundation day was a day to weep then to joy given the current state of affairs in Jamia where values are put on shelf and corruption is rampant.

Barbaad-e-Gulistan ke liye ek hi Ulloo kafi tha
Har shaakh pe Ulloo baitha hai Anjaam-e-Gulistan kya hoga

May people do some introspection and take heed!”

Thanks for reading,
Baseer Siddiqui

The authority’s stand on the whole issue is not known.

OT view
We condemn the use of such language against Jamia vice chancellor Najeeb Jung, who is an asset to the community and nation. It is against JMI culture. We may agree to disagree with some of his stands (a former IAS officer) but using indecent language is uncalled for. The use of such language only shows that his/her education is incomplete.

I agree that the usage of foul language doesn’t go down well with the culture of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). I am sure Basheer must be regretting for one word which brings criticism to him. I am confident that from next time onwards he will be careful. Allow me to say that apart from just one word crook, Basheer’s thought is widely accepted and approved. He is a young man who is at pain to see the affairs of his alma mater which is dear to him. We need to understand the emotion and feelings of Basheer as well. Just the usage of the word crook for the first and last time doesn’t make him incomplete in his education. I totally disagree on that note. I reiterate that whatever Basheer said is the voice of each and every alumnus who has even a remote sense of attachment with JMI. When Jung fights a jung with his own students, plays with the careers of the students for whom this university was founder and now run, nobody comes out and register even a polite protest. Here, just a slip of tongue out of flowing emotion makes him illiterate? This young illiterate is much better than those semi literates who fail to call spade a spade. Thank you and love you Basheer but please avoid using the word crook for such a saint i.e Hon'ble Najeeb Jung.

I agree with Ali Arshad, Jamia alumni directory has lost its credentials a long back for me. However except for that one word Baseer has said everything right.

What's the big deal with the word 'crook' when used for Mr Jung. Ask anybody in the civil services community and they will tell you why he is considered a big traitor and much more corrupt than the word crook can suggest. He was the joint secretary of exploration) in Ministry of Petroleum. Equipped with confidential information on KG basin, Mr Jung quits services and joins Reliance Petroleum. He, along with a corrupt system are responsible for Mukesh Ambani's enormous wealth that has come at the cost of millions of poor Indians. Anyway, what is his contribution to the community? Why can't we look up to spotless careers of bureaucrats like SY Qureshi, Wajahat Habibullah, Naseem Zaidi etc. The only reason why Mr Najeeb Jung is here at Jamia is that both he and the former HRD minister - Kapil Sibal... Besides, as vice chancellor, he has not been able to add anything to the university - both in terms of infrastructure or culture... in fact in some cases messing up all the good work done by his predecessors (discontinuing talimi mela, withdrawing demand for inquiry into Batla house fake encounter etc). Just leaving a few published links so that you or Mr Asad or somebody at OT is able to join the dots. http://www.rediff.com/money/2002/oct/31ril.htm http://delhiwhispers.blogspot.in/2008/11/what-is-happening-in-great-reliance.html?zx=d6f0b7e1b5db4d6d
