After SC verdict and students poll in Aligarh all eyes on JamiaOT, December 20, 2011 17:17 IST Okhla Times Campus Reporter/JMI The recent Supreme Court decision to allow Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to hold its students’ union elections in 2012 after a gap of three years has come as a shot in the arm of a few Jamia Millia Islamia students, who for long have been urging with the new administration to hold students’ union election. Other than this the students’ union elections held in Aligarh Muslim University this month may offer some hopes of JMI students who since March 31, 2006 have been deprived of their constitutional right. Till now the aurthorites have been peddling different stories for not holding students’ elections. Recently in a reply to a RTI filed by a student group, JMI authorities said: “The Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has had students’ union whenever the atmosphere in the campus was conducive.” The university didn’t give any timeframe. The proponents of elections are not convinced with this argument. Himadri Shekhar Mistri, who cleared his Post Graduation this year, said: “The university lacks any democratric forum. Students should get an opportunity to air their grievances.” The pro-students’ union elections movement in JMI got a setback this year when Afroz Alam Sahil, convenor, Forum For Students Democracy, quit the campus.
