Report has surfaced that Jamia Millia Islamia is going to inaugurate a 400-bedded hostel for Jammu and Kashmir students which was conceived back in 2012 when Najeeb Jung was Vice Chancellor of the university (from 2009 to 2013)
“It is nearing its completion stage. The Secretary Higher Education of your state too has visited the varsity recently. It will be inaugurated either this month or by early next month,” Owes Ahmad, Assistant Registrar and Secretary to VC Talat Ahmad told The Kashmir Monitor over the phone.
Professor Ahmad was formally appointed as the 14th Vice-Chancellor of Jamia in April 2014.
According to the paper, the hostel was funded by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) with the MoU being signed between then J&K Government, MHA and Jamia in 2012 standing at Rs 16.22 crore and it was to be completed by February 2014.
However, quoting another official of the varsity the report said the actual cost has turned out to be Rs 20 crore.
It is understood that the date of the inauguration of the hostel will be announced as per the schedule of the J&K Education Minister “who is most likely to be the one inaugurating the hostel”, Owes told the TKM.
The hostel is to provide accommodation to 400 students of postgraduate, graduate level students (separate for boys and girls) from J&K.
