Some Jamia Millia Islamia students are protesting against “pro-administrative and undemocratic students’ council” being floated by the university. They have called for a public meeting at Union Hall Building, Opposition Central Canteen, Jamia today at 1.00 pm.
“All the students in the university strongly condemn this unconstitutional and Incompetent Students Council whose electroral college will be limited to CRs only. This authoritarian Students Council (to be headed by the VC) is being imposed on us 17000 students of JMI. We demand a democratically elected Students Union in Jamia Millia Islamia for the larger welfare of the student community of JMI. For the same, join students meeting of All JMI Students on 21st March (Tuesday) at 1pm at Union Hall (Central Canteen),” wrote NSUI Jamia on its social media timeline.
Earlier, students had even walked out from a meeting called by university officials at Engineering Faculty Auditorium to convince them to participate in students council election whose date of filing nominations too have been announced. Official version could not be ascertained.
The students’ effort for direct elections is being supported by some alumni also. It was in 2006 when Jamia had banned students’ union election on the campus. Since then students have been protesting peacefully on the campus with little impact.
