Jamia Millia Islamia celebrated 48th Foundation Day of National Service Scheme (NSS) on Sunday, reports Shubham Pandey.
The day began with two lined-up events, having an interactive workshop in it, followed by cultural activities in the evening.
The day’s first event was an awareness workshop on ‘Substance Abuse Prevention’ which was organised by the Faculty of Social Science in collaboration with National Institute of Social Defense (NISD). It was mainly organized for the target audience of Jamia’s NSS volunteers and other Under Graduate & Post Graduate students with the sole aim to make all those realize about exterminatory effect of drug addiction in one’s life.
Dr. Rajesh Kumar from Society for Promotion of Youth and Masses (SPYM) with a couple of PowerPoint presentations, explained about the psychological mal-functioning in a drug-addict and other physical, mental and social ill-effects relating them. After this, the NSS volunteers and other students present there were divided into four groups and were given specific topics on the same theme to discuss. Later making the session interactive, one person from each group was called to speak upon the key-points discussed within the group in front of all.
Dr. J. P. Kapoor, Director for the Directorate of Family Welfare, Govt. of NCT of Delhi emphasized upon the immunization of substance abuse and motivated the volunteers to take it strongly to the community.
After this awareness workshop, a presentation on ‘Prevent Dengue’ was also given by the Chief Medical Officer of University’s Ansari Health Centre, Dr. Irshad Husain. In his brief presentation, he laid emphasis on to prevent the breeding and bite of mosquitoes though various means and practices. For ones showing its symptoms, he suggested all those to maintain enough liquid in the sufferer’s body and a timed diagnose before the disease intensifies.
In the other half, NSS Foundation day was celebrated by the volunteers. Congratulating all the volunteers, Programme Coordinator Professor N. U. Khan asked all the NSS Jamia volunteers to work dedicatedly for the welfare of society in the same passion, in the way it was carried on by the volunteers since the last 47 years. Instead of remaining confined to the Jamia campus, he asked the volunteers to work even in the surrounding areas of the University and put forward innovative idea of any volunteer without hesitation in front of the management committee.
Marking the day, a short-film showcasing various activities done in the past by NSS Jamia was shown. Apart from this, various cultural performances like solo songs, group songs, mono acting and poem recitation programmes were also organised by the volunteers.
