A Jamia Nagar girl wrote this letter to OKHLATIMES.COM.
She wrote: “I want to bring to you an issue of girls in Okhla facing eve-teasing and stalking every day. I wish to keep my identity a secret but I want someone to raise this issue seriously. It’s not easy even to go out to get a phone recharged without boys whistling at you. Even when girls are fully covered with niqab they can sense prying eyes and stalkers. Please spread awareness.”
This is not first such letter that the portal has received. A few months ago, the portal had carried a write-up by another resident, who too had raised such sensitive issues in her post, upsetting several self-proclaimed activists.
Incidents of youth hanging around the corner of streets in the locality are turning out to be common, lamented residents, adding that with little work at hand they can be seen eve-teasing girls. Moreover, a resident pointed that such crowds can be mostly seen outside girls’ schools and coaching institutes. The problem is that if anybody’s try to argue with such wayward youths chances are that they would be attacked, said another resident, who added that how a teacher was attacked years ago in the locality.
Many residents suggest that ostrich like approach will not do any good and hence to nip such things in the bud it is important to organise awareness campaign by roping in religious leaders and parents and elderly. Are we ready?
