Travelling from Okhla to Jama Masjid by phatphat gets dearer with the owners and drivers deciding to raise the fair by Rs 5, according to daily commuters.
Earlier, residents used to pay Rs 20 for a trip from Okhla to Jama Masjid and vice versa by phatphat, but with the new changes now they have to pay Rs 5 extra that is Rs 25, said a commuter.
For days the owners and drivers were split over increasing the fare with some drivers fearing that this would hit their service with passengers preferring metro or other mode of transportation. A phatphat driver said on the condition of anonymity that some vehicle owners in Okhla were not in favour of fare hike at a time when business is not so good.
But a few days ago the issue was resolved in a meeting where decision was taken to hike the fare.
Drivers, who supported the fare hike, argued that the fare was same for the last seven years and Rs 5 is not a big money at a time when metro too has arrived at the doorstep of Batla House.
It is not known whether the fare hike will have impact on the vehicle service.
A passenger, who still prefers phatphat over metro, bus and auto, said one reaches Jamia Masjid fast. However, he said it is overcrowded as more passengers are adjusted than the vehicle’s seating capacity.
