Initially as the crowd swelled outside the police station, there were confusions as many had no idea why they were at the police station. When OKHLATIMES spoke with a few people they all expressed ignorance and said they were told to come in by residents as a few youths were misguiding youths in the locality claiming about arrival of Christ and Imam Mahdi.

The ruckus started after an Imam of Hari mosque stopped a few youths from spreading false information about the arrival of Imam Mahdi, said residents. The youths got agitated and got engaged into heated debate with the Imam, said eyewitnesses, adding that other residents too arrived on the spot leading to a fight and stone pelting. A man who had bandage on his head said he was attacked by the Mahdi group, who are spreading their support in the locality.

The youth were taken to trauma centre as they were thrashed by residents. However, the youth filed a complaint against the Imam which enraged the residents. An announcement was made from several mosques requesting residents to turn up at the police station to show solidarity.

Within a few minutes many turned up and peacefully protested until activist Pervez Mohammad, who was attacked by goons, arrived on the spot handful of his supporters and blocked the road.

The Mahdi group is understood to be headed by some controversial religious man from Bihar, claimed sources. Former Okhla MLA Asif Md Khan too arrived at the police station to resolve the issue.

He told OKHLATIMES that the SHO has assured him and protesters that action would be soon taken against the accused who are trying to spoil the peaceful environment of the locality by spreading wrong information about religion and hurting residents’ sentiments.
