The only hospital in New Delhi to have its own horticulture department, Holy Family hospital promotes healthy living by handing out free saplings.
Highlighting the importance of healthy living and environment conservation, Holy Family Hospital, Okhla Road, New Delhi kick-started a new initiative of providing free saplings. The catalyst behind the idea was the presence of innumerable and lush neem and jamun trees that are spread across the hospital’s campus. Since these two varieties of trees have scientifically-proven health benefits, the hospital management decided to encourage its patrons to plant more saplings to live a healthy life.
Holy Family is the only hospital in New Delhi that has its own horticulture department and is looked after by experienced and qualified professionals who routinely organize sessions on environmental conservation through sustainable methods. The ‘Green Efficiency’ move is aimed at sensitizing the community about the importance of saving the environment from further hazards. Interestingly, Holy Family Hospital is one of the very few healthcare centers in the national capital that runs on solar power. The hospital, which has 350 beds, nine operation theaters, and fifty intensive care units has 200 air-conditioners and thousands of electrical lights, that is powered by solar panels. Footing the bills on its own, the hospital does not get any government rebates.
Fr. George P.A., Director, Holy Family Hospital, noted, “Over the last 64 years, it has been the hospital’s endeavour to give impetus to healthy living as it forms the DNA of the hospital’s mission and vision. The hospital takes pride in providing quality treatment under the supervision of some very senior doctors at affordable prices. The Green Initiative is a testimony of our unflinching belief – Health First. The horticulturists at the hospital have worked untiringly to give a strong foundation to the saplings so that they are ready to be planted once they are with our patrons who share the same belief.”
Speaking about the Green Initiative drive through providing free saplings, Unni Nair, PRO, Holy Family Hospital, said, “After initiating the use of solar power to meet the hospital’s requirements, Holy Family hospital is once again proud to start an initiative that aims at curbing carbon emissions and looks at sustainability. The hospital has got many firsts to its credit but this move is something that aims at bringing other establishments and individuals together for achieving the common good. The pollution level in our national capital has risen at an alarming rate over the past couple of years, which has led to some serious respiratory conditions. These saplings should be taken as a clarion call so that further damage can be averted and the coming generations can lead a healthier life.”
