Fadia Khanam wears hijab but she is a regular at gym in Jamia Nagar. She is not the only one. Like her there are many who daily flock to local gyms that of late have mushroomed in the locality. An elderly, who has rented part of his building to a local gym, told OT.COM that many hijab-wearing women do come. When asked how many do come on daily basis, he said at least 50 of these women are wearing hijab.
At times, they are even dropped by their male family members.
“There is nothing wrong. Girls are no longer behind men. They come here to exercise and keep fit. There is a woman trainer too. With no open space in the locality and dust all over, this is the best place for women to keep fit,” said the elderly man requesting not to be quoted.
Fadia, who lives in Batla House, said there are many hijab-wearing girls who come to gym.
Rozy Rakib, a housewife, said if some visit gym to get fit there are many who are regular at Jamaat campus where they walk for a few minutes every day.
“I know a hijab-wearing married woman, who earlier used to come here to walk, now joining gym to stay fit,” she said.
For those who think that Muslim women are deprived this is the best example, said another resident.
