The protest that erupted in Jamia Millia Islamia’s old girl hostel located nearby Tikona Park on Tuesday night ended peacefully after the administration accepted protesting students’ demands, said sources.
University student Naseema Choudhury said: “We submitted a memorandum to the girls’ residence and it was accepted. It was only after which we called off our stir. Our demands were: 1) Reinstate fees of old free structure from last year. 2) Keep gym fees optional. 3) Fees rebate of vacation, leave. 4) No retaliatory action must be taken against dissenting students for just cause. 5) Those students, who have submitted the fee of this semester, must be repaid refunds. 6) There are a lot of issues that we face please give us a date and time to discuss the same in a GBM.”
“There was a talk of some kind of small fee hike. The matter has been sorted out and the students too have agreed. There will be no changes in the fee structure,” said university media coordinator Professor Saima Saeed.
The protest on Tuesday had come just a day after a small protest was held on the campus by boy hostellers. A student leader had shared a few photos on his timeline. The protest was resolved immediately.
However, the girl hostellers’ protest got coverage in the sense that videos of the protest have been doing the rounds on the social media with many sharing it.
