Good news for e-rickshaw owners

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday released the subsidy of Rs 30,000 each to 6,000 E-rickshaw owners registered with the Delhi government at the jam-packed Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

The Chief Minister said pollution is among the biggest problem faced by the residents of Delhi and E-Rickshaws provide a solution to air pollution and last mile connectivity.

On this occasion, the Chief Minister handed over intimation letters regarding release of subsidy to 26 e-Rickshaw owners including, two women.

It was announced in the programme that subsidy amount to the 6,000 E-rickshaw owners is being directly transferred in their bank accounts. The Delhi Government had earlier announced a subsidy of Rs 15,000/- in 2015 to owners of newly-purchased battery-operated e-rickshaws which are authorised and registered by the Transport Department. This subsidy amount was later enhanced to Rs 30,000 for the e-rickshaws purchased with effect from 1.4.2016.

As per the Scheme, an individual can claim subsidy only on one e-rickshaw. No subsidy is permitted on subsequent purchase by the same individual. The subsidy is given by Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) from the Air Ambience Fund.

In the first phase, in February 2016, at Chhatrasal Stadium, Delhi Government had granted subsidy of Rs. 15000/ each to 2850 e-rickshaw owners. On Saturday, about 6000 e-rickshaw owners, whose particulars have been verified by Transport Department were granted subsidy of around Rs 15 crores. The amount of subsidy will be directly credited into the bank account of e-rickshaw owners shortly.

Environment Minister Imran Hussain appreciated the efforts of DPCC and Transport Department in releasing the subsidy to the e-Rickshaw owners. He further reiterated the commitment of Delhi Govt. in devising various ways for controlling air pollution in Delhi.

Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said instructions have been given to all the MLOs for ensuring verification of documents of e-Rickshaw owners so that the timely process of release of subsidy could be completed. He assured that all the necessary cooperation and assistance will be provided to Environment Department/ DPCC in future as well.

Speaking on the occasion, Sisodia congratulated the Chief Minister for extending the benefit of subsidy to the e-Rickshaw owners. He further stated that e-Rickshaws not only help in controlling air pollution but have also proved to be a source of earning livelihood by the lower strata of the Society.

The Chief Minister announced that all those e-Rickshaw owners who submit necessary documents i.e. permanent driving licence, bank account details and cancelled cheque by 22nd July, 2017 with the respective MLOs, their subsidy will be credited in the bank account by July 31, 2017.

Chief Minister also declared that those who cannot approach MLOs till 22nd July, 2017, may submit the requisite documents with their area MLAs as well.

He also clarified that the scheme is continuing and those applicants who are unable to submit the documents by July 22, 2017, may submit thereafter and the subsidy will be released accordingly.

The Chief Minister also hoped that on the lines of e-Rickshaw, Delhi will start switching to other types of e-Vehicles for improving air quality in future.

E-rickshaws have zero emissions. They provide a green, clean and easy alternative to small vehicle. Subsidy to E-Rickshaw is of immense financial help to the weaker sections of society as well as leads to lowering of air pollution.

The programme was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Environment Minister Imran Hussain, Transport Minister Kaliash Gahlot, Water Minister Rajendar Pal Gautam, senior officers of the Delhi Government and many MLAs.
