Abbasi colony dismantled peacefully after overcoming initial hurdles

The demolition of Abbasi colony build on the land of Jamia Millia Islamia has been accomplished peacefully after overcoming initial hurdles, according to eyewitnesses. It is understood that it was from 7 AM when securing started pouring in on the university campus. Also, bulldozers, fire brigades, vehicles, ambulances and other items necessary for carrying demolition were brought to the campus and parked nearby the school.

A large number of security men had assembled at the lawn of history Dr Ansari Auditorium where top officials addressed the police giving them tips how to handle the situation. Jamia officials, including Proctor and assistant proctors and officials from building departments were present on the site interacting officials. Also, present were university legal cell that was seen trying to convince the agitating residents with documents that the land belonged to Jamia and nobody else, said sources.

It is understood that the case of the 2.5 bigha is very old. Moreover, the action was taken only after the court order. Another failed attempt to get the land cleared was made a few weeks ago when bulldozers and other equipment had landed on the campus. But the operation was given up at the last moment as enough security forces could be arranged to carry out a difficult task.

However, it was on Tuesday that the task was accomplished peacefully with little resistance with residents seen moving out of their houses with their items.
