Currency ban: Protest rally in Batla House

Congress members of Okhla block took out a rally in Okhla on Sunday against the currency ban announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 9 in a televised address to the nation.

Several local leaders, including Pervez Alam Khan and others participated in the rally.

The Congress staged protests across the Capital to highlight the difficulties being faced by people in withdrawing change and exchanging old currency notes.

The rally in Okhla was taken out from Zakir Nagar to Batla House, said Khan, adding that the currency ban has caused hardship to the residents, who have been compelled to stand in long queues to get money. Since the ban has been implemented in the country, business too has been hit hard with market place wearing deserted look.

Former Union Minister Ajay Maken, the party’s Delhi Unit chief, said the decision, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has triggered “financial anarchy”. “The autocratic decision by one man to bolster his image has plummeted the whole country into a financial anarchy,” said Maken, addressing protesters at Jahangirpuri.

He alleged a “big scam” behind demonetisation, saying it was a “ploy” to transfer the savings of the poor to the rich, which has brought the entire country “to a standstill”.
