Two-time sitting Congress councillor Shoeb Danish has won the election. He won for the third time.
He defeated AAP’s Mahmood Ahmed in the contest.
A Jamia alumnus 52-year-old Shoeb is a Congressman who took political plunge more than a decade ago and had won elections on Congress ticket from Zakir Nagar ward. He got 10,759 votes with runner up Mahmood getting 9,700 votes with BJP candidate standing at third place, according to available online data.
Since then has been winning. And with this latest win he has recorded a hat-trick. The journey to victory was hard as he had to face stiff resistance from AAP’s Mahmood who stood at second position.
Before joining AAP, Mahmood worked as TV journalist in Hindi channel. It was litmus test for AAP’s popularity in Okhla from where more than two years ago Amanatullah Khan had won with record margin.
This time around there were tension also during the high-voltage campaign in the locality with workers of both Congress and AAP allegedly clashing late night on the day when Arvind Kejriwal had visited Shaheen Bagh to drum up support for his candidates in Okhla.
Besides, there is jubilation in Shoeb’s camp over the win.
Conceding defeat, Mahmood addressed his well-wishers on the social media and thanked them for backing his candidacy and standing by him for all these days during campaigning.
