Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla, who a few weeks ago was appointed as chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, is to visit the university on June 19.
It is understood that during her visit she is to unfurl a national flag and unveil the ‘Wall of Heroes’ put at Dr Zakir Husain library after taking charge as the chancellor of the university.
“The photographs of the soldiers have been put up right next to the wall displaying the photographs of the founders of the nearly century-old university,” the university release quoted the Vice-Chancellor, Talat Ahmad, as saying.
Moreover, Heptulla will also unfurl a national flag hoisted on a 102-foot- high pole.
The wall carries the photographs of the 21 Param Vir Chakra recipients, the country’s highest military decoration. The ‘Wall of Heroes’ is a move taken under the ‘Vidya Veerta Abhiyan’ campaign of the HRD Ministry. Other Central universities have also recently unveiled the ‘Wall of Heroes’ on their campuses.
Heptulla’s appointed had sparked a debate also on the social media with some Jamia alumni criticizing the move and some appreciating it. The Wall of Hero too had upset some students as they had protested to removing freedom fighters’ photos from the front of the library. However, things were settled as the university acted on time with the students too welcoming the move.
