April 22, 2011: Other than English and Hindi, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is known for teaching many foreign languages including Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian, Italian and others. Also, the Central University has departments that teach classical languages such as Persian and Arabic that forms the backbone of research into early medieval and pre-colonial Indian history. Over a long period the 90-year-old University located in New Delhi has carved a place for itself among Indian universities in teaching Oriental and European languages.
The Persian Department teaches Turkenian, Kazaki and Pashto.
Media coordinator Simi Malhotra told OKHLA TIMES: “Jamia is a unique university that teaches many foreign languages including Catalan that is spoken in Spain and Europe.” From this year onward the University is going to run Diploma in Catalan.
Director Centre for European and Latin American Studies Sonia Gupta said by phone: “We have been running certificate course in Catalan for the last two years and the response has been overwhelming.” Catalan is spoken in a Catalunia, a highly industrialized province of Spain. Last year some two Jamia students went to Barcelona on a scholarship. Right now some 15 students are studying Catalan in the certificate course, according to Gupta.
JMI has a tie up with the Catalunia government for teaching the language in the University. Under this agreement every year the Spain government send highly-trained Catalan teachers to the University. Also, the Centre for European and Latin American Studies has unrolled MPhil in European studies and Latin American Studies from this semester onwards.
Besides, Turkish is also taught at three levels: certificate, diploma and advanced diploma. Other than traditional courses, the Arabic Department train students in modern Arabic that helps them improve their translation skills.
The Academy of Third World Studies run courses in Uzbeck and Kyrgiz.
“Knowledge of these languages help open a lot of job opportunities for students in web content and translation. Besides, good command of these languages help researchers access vital information that are not available in English,” said Malhotra.
