The old days of girls wearing one style of burkha (hijab) is gone. In Okhla itself one can see several hijab shops mushrooming. Some among them offer trendy hijab with different styles.
It is common to see new style of hijab in Muslim-dominated Jamia Nagar. But some residents feel that though it is a personal choice a certain things need to be taken care of. And of them cleanliness is a major issue.
A resident said it is common to see girl wearing long hijab touching the ground and at times it is so long that it does the work of a broom.
Abu Bakar, who deals in hijab business in Okhla, said now trendy hijab is dominating the market.
“But care should be taken that the hijab is not so long that it touches the road and becomes dirty. From time to time one see woman wearing very long hijabs something that is at times seen in the Middle East where one can spot woman wearing long hijab in mall. As the mall is clean one can understand. But still it is not acceptable as this can dirty your clothes. Women should think that the purpose of wearing cloth is to remain clean also. I don’t understand how they wear it in Okhla where we all know that the roads are dirty and the hijab too gets dirty. It should not do the work of broom. It should be not long touching the road and overflowing,” he said.
Islamic scholar Waris Mazhair said care should be taken that the hijab or any cloth one wears should not be too long that it touches the road, getting dirty and then carrying with it the dirt.
