Burglar having lavish lifestyle, once based in Shaheen Bagh, stole from Okhla’s rich to help the poor and moved around in his village as social activist

The story of Shaheen Bagh resident is worth reading. He burgled houses in posh colonies to serve the poor in his village and over a period of time build an image of real-life-Robin Hood. That what is why when police caught him from his native Bihar’s Pupri district for involvement in at least 12 cases of burglary, many in his neighbourhood did not believe it. “Villagers knew him by the name of Ujala Babu,” an investigator told HT.

The shopkeeper, Dharmender, has also been arrested.

Irfan, 27, came to Delhi four years ago in search of employment and he opened a clothes shop in Bawana area for some time, where he came into the contact of other associates. For the last one year he was staying in Shaheen Bagh.

During interrogation he told police that he was a 5th class dropout.

“Stolen jewellery weighing about 320 gram was recovered from their possession. Total 12 cases of burglary and house theft in different areas of South East District and Delhi NCR have been worked out,” said police.

After a complaint police starting working on to crack the case and during their investigation they find that some robbers from Sitamarhi were committing burglaries in the areas. He was living a luxurious life in his native town. After his arrest police were able to recover stolen jewellery items.

It was the CCTV footages from burglary prone area of PS New Friends Colony of year 2016 -2017 revealed clear picture of the accused person and helped police to grab him.

During interrogation, police found that the accused used to roam in posh areas of Delhi and NCR.

DCP south-east Romil Baniya said Irfan used to spending money in bars/clubs in Mumbai and Delhi. In one of the bars in Delhi, heoffered to give Rs 10,000 to hear a song of his choice, said police, adding that he was living a luxurious life with access to latest cars and fashionable clothes.

“Pictures on social media reveal the lavish lifestyle of the burglar. He maintained a larger than life image in his native area. He would often fund money on health camps for poor peoples in his village. Further investigation is in progress and accused are being interrogated to affect more recovery. He claims to have committed burglaries in UP and Punjab as well. Further interrogation is on to connect him with more cases,” said officials.
