Though BJP didn’t win from any Muslim-dominated wards in Delhi in the MCD polls 2017, the biggest surprise came from Zakir Nagar from where its candidate son of the soil Kunwar Rafi managed to stay at third position.
His performance has only left many thinking that the BJP has succeeded in making inroads into Muslim votes that too in a Muslim-dominated locality. Congress Shoeb Danish managed to win for the third time with AAP’s Mahmood holding the second position. BJP’s Kunwar managed to get 1,959 votes with RJD’s Kausar Imam Siddique getting 1,887 votes.
The election campaigning to Zakir Nagar ward saw several ups and downs and also some tense moments. Residents remember how on the night when Arvind Kejriwal had visited Okhla, some Congress workers and AAP workers allegedly clashed. Councillor’s Shoeb name was dragged in the controversy who later on did FB live to clear the air.
Moreover this election was a litmus test for AAP MLA Aamantullah Khan, who a few years ago had won with record margin from Okhla by defeating then sitting Congress MLA Asif Md Khan.
By winning the election, Shoeb has once again proved that Zakir Nagar continues to be bastion of Congress as he has been ruling the locality unchallenged for the last more that ten years.
