How big is the poster industry in Okhla? This and other questions are being asked as civic elections are just a few weeks away.
Though there is no data available, a few people who regularly put hoarding and posters in the locality promoting their products said it is a growing business.
Poster and hoarding baazi is popular in Muslim-dominated Jamia Nagar only. One can easily spot posters of schools, coaching institutes and leaders across the locality. And as elections come the area has been plastered with posters which in many ways are in alleged violation of the Delhi defacement bill.
Most of the posters are put at night time and when asked, a person pasting poster said they charge Rs 1 per poster leave alone their prices. To get a visibility, one needs to have at least 10,000 posters that can be put on walls across the locality in lanes too, said a resident, adding that what is surprising is that these leaders who in their drive to get popular are actually dirtying the locality and even flouting the law.
An activist, who once visited Jamia Nagar, during previous election in the locality from Sarita Vihar, was left shocked to see posters all over and how the walls were dirtied by self-proclaimed leaders.
Moreover, it has been noticed that when it comes to posters, hoardings and banners, coaching institutes take the lead and spend a huge amount of money on it, said sources requesting anonymity.
