Delhi’s AAP government Social Welfare Minister Rajender Pal Gautam visited Batla House and interacted with 80-year-old Urdu poet Asrar Jamayee, a Jamia Millia Islamia alumnus who has been living in the locality for years, said sources.
The poet has been in the news for long since he has been ‘dead’ according to records since 2013. He has struggled all these days to get his pension restored with little success.
AAP worker Saeed said the Minister met Asrar Jamayee and assured all help.
“It was in the morning when the Minister came to meet the Batla House poet. The Minister has told the officials to find out the reason behind this and start a probe. Also, he has asked to restore his pension immediately,” said another AAP worker Firoz Khan.
Asrar Jamayee used to get Rs 1,500 monthly pension, his sole source of livelihood.
“I have been invited to recite my work in the U.S., Europe, Singapore, Dubai, China and several other countries. For every invitation I used to get anything between Rs 50, 000 to Rs 1 lakh. Though I still attend mushairas, I cannot always participate due to my age,” he said as The Hindu quoted.
An engineering graduate from Jamia, Asrar Jamayee know struggles to live a decent life. Looking at his condition, Dubai-based Jamia alumnus Zubair Irshad has given a call for collection of funds to help the poet.
“The minister (Gautam) visited him this morning and discussed all his problems. He also asked his (Jamayee’s) caretaker to submit basic necessary document so that his pension can be restored,” a senior official said.
“Beneficiaries need to submit living certificates annually to avail of the benefits. At times, names are struck off from the list of beneficiaries if people don’t submit. The probe will find out as to what happened,” he said.
It has been reported that it was actually Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia who after reading his ordeal was moved and he directed Gautam to visit Jamayee’s residence and correct the blunder.
“Have asked Rajendr Gautam ji, Minister Social Welfare & Urdu Academy, to meet Asrar Sahib and do the needful within 48 hours,” Sisodia had tweeted.
