AMU in soup for rejecting UGC regulations?

The issue of appointment of Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University has again reached the apex court with a former student knocking its doors.

A petitioner Abrar Ahmad has challenged the process of the appointment of new Vice Chancellor alleging that the university has no regard for the UGC regulations.

Lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who is arguing the case, said: “The Vice Chancellor is doing everything disregarding the law of the land.”

Supreme Court will hear this matter on Monday.

Interestingly, the Executive Council is meeting on Saturday to select a panel of five names for the post of Vice Chancellor. This list of contenders will be sent to the AMU court which in turn will vote to recommend three names to the President of India who is also the visitor of the university. The Court will vote on the panel of names on April 7.

This process of selection of new VC – which was initiated by the current Vice Chancellor Zameeruddin Shah last week – has now been challenged in the Supreme Court.

The petitioner has alleged that the AMU administration has started the process of selection of new VC disregarding the UGC regulations. AMU has refused to follow the UGC regulation saying it has its own statutes and not bound to follow the UGC regulations.

The UGC regulation says that a VC should be an academic with minimum ten years of teaching experience. But, insiders say, AMU wants to appoint the current Pro-Vice Chancellor Brigadier Syed Ahmad Ali who is from army background and has no teaching experience. Therefore, Vice Chancellor Zameeruddin Shah is leaving no stone unturned to empanel brigadier Ali’s name.

OKHLATIMES could not confirm this development officially. However, AMU’s PRO Rahat Abrar told OKHLATIMES that whatever the university is doing is within the ambit of law. On being asked about whether it is not violating UGC regulation, he said: “We are working as per our Act. The VC is appointment is defined in the statutes.”
