Ameeruddin and Ishrat Beghum need no introduction. Ameeruddin is husband of Ishrat, the sitting councillor form Abul Fazal Enclave ward that last time was a reserved seat. This time around Ishrat is not contesting for reasons best known to her.
In her absence, it is Ameeruddin who is BSP’s candidate from Okhla’s ward number 102S Abul Fazal Enclave. Ameeruddin’s posters are visible all over in the locality. Ameeruddin is planning to trample over the Opposition. Will he succeed or flounder: It is too early to jump to any conclusion, but Ameeruddin, like other candidates in the locality, is doing all he could to drum up support for himself. Up against formidable opposition, it would be interesting to see what measures he takes to beat anti-incumbency.
MIM Delhi secretary Afzal Ansari, who is also resident of Shaheen Bagh, said it was only a few days ago he came to know from sources that Ameeruddin is contesting from this ward.
“Let me tell you frankly during his wife’s tenure very little development took place in the locality. Residents are really upset. It will not be smooth ride for him,” he said.
But nothing can be said as he is a strong backing from Saifi community. With elections in Okhla fought caste, region and group lines, chances are that if the Saifi community backs him, he can beat the anti-incumbency. But Ansari doesn’t concur with this argument claiming that MIM too has fielded a Saifi.
Besides, the BJP too has decided to back another Saifi candidate after nomination of its earlier candidate was cancelled on alleged technical ground.
