Actor Sharmila Tagore is to visit Jamia Millia Islamia again on January 17 to inaugurate the Film Club of the university to be held at 12.30 pm at Dr. M.A. Ansari Auditorium at a function where Kiran Karnik, former NASSCOM President, also known for his work in the broadcasting and outsourcing industries, will be the Chief Guest.
The Film Club will be launched by Jamia to encourage study of cinema as an art form as well as a medium of mass communication.
Jamia Vice Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad will preside over the function.
Highlighting the significance of the film club, a senior official of the university said it will encourage study of cinema as an art form and will provide students’ exposure to quality Indian and world cinemas.
Sharmila Tagore, who has acted in many films, including Kashmir Ki Kali, Aaradhna and Mausam, was the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (the Indian Censor Board) from 2006-2011.
She is an avid cinephile who has served as member of many prestigious film festival juries including the Cannes Film Festival. She was also the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for HIV/AIDS and Maternal Health, wrote Saima Saeed, Hony Deputy Media coordinator, Jamia.
