More than two years ago when Assembly elections were held in Okhla, then Congress bastion, the AAP party candidate had won with record margin.
Looking at the record win it was expected that the party will repeat its magic performance in Okhla in the MCD polls 2017 by sweeping away Congress from the locality.
But nothing like this happened as AAP managed to win only one seat out of five in OKhla.
The Congress won two seats and BJP two. Two-time sitting Congress councillor succeeded in managing a hat-trick from Zakir Nagar by defeating AAP’s Mahmood Ahmed, who fought well.
In Sarita Vihar too, Congress managed a win with Nitu registering victory for the second time. It was in Abul Fazal Enclave where Congress was humbled with AAP’s Wajid Khan sailing through by defeating Congress youth leader Pervez Alam Khan, who too put up a resistance.
The results of two other wards were not in support of AAP as the BJP won.
Across the national Capital, BJP succeeded in retaining the civic agencies that it ruled for more than ten years. The party’s corporation-wise tally is: SDMC – 70, NDMC – 64 and EDMC – 47 as against AAP’s tally of 16, 21 and 11 respectively.
The Congress finished last with 12, 15 and 3 wards.
Efforts made to contact Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan to get his comment on the development failed as he was not reachable.
