AAP hit by bypoll jolt 10 days ahead of MCD elections

After BJP registered a huge victory in Rajouri Garden Assembly bypoll with AAP’s candidate losing his deposit by as Harjeet Singh managed to get only 10,243 votes, less than one-sixth of the total votes polled.

BJP-SAD joint candidate Manjinder Singh Sirsa bagged 40,602 votes with Congress’ Meenakshi Chandela finished second with 25,950 votes.

With defeat coming just ten days before the April 23 municipal polls, many political observers have termed it a body blow to the party from the seat where bypoll was declared after its MAL Jarnail Singh quit as MLA to contest the Punjab Assembly poll.

Following the development, the BJP has demanded resignation of Arvind Kejriwal. “After humiliating defeat in the bypoll, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal should give his resignation on moral ground as his party has completely been rejected by people in this election,” said BJP MP Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma while addressing a press conference.

On the other hand Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia attributed the defeat to Jarnail quitting the seat that made people unhappy.

“There was anger among people after Jarnail went to Punjab. We tried convincing them, but with the results we are realising that people were not convinced and remained upset,” he said. Also, he added that the verdict won’t have any impact on the MCD polls that is ruled by the BJP.
